NVIDIA App vs GeForce Experience

In previous lessons, we’ve explored how NVIDIA Control Panel and advanced driver settings can improve your Microsoft Flight Simulator experience.

Today, we’re going to look at NVIDIA’s software itself.

For many years, GeForce Experience was the primary application used to manage NVIDIA graphics drivers, game optimisation and recording features.

More recently, NVIDIA introduced the NVIDIA App, which combines many of these features into a modern interface while adding new tools and replacing much of GeForce Experience.

Many Flight Simulator users still ask:

  • Should I use GeForce Experience or the NVIDIA App?
  • Should I install every new driver immediately?
  • Should I let NVIDIA optimise my game automatically?
  • What happens if a new driver causes problems?

1. What Is the NVIDIA App?

The NVIDIA App is NVIDIA’s modern graphics management software.

  • Access game optimisation features.

2. What Was GeForce Experience?

GeForce Experience was NVIDIA’s previous companion application.

Although many of these features remain available, NVIDIA is transitioning users toward the newer NVIDIA App.

Both applications perform many of the same tasks, but the NVIDIA App offers a more modern experience.

NVIDIA App

  • Combines multiple NVIDIA tools.
  • Improved performance monitoring.
  • Driver management.
  • Overlay features.
  • Ongoing development.

GeForce Experience

  • Older interface.
  • Legacy software.
  • Similar driver management.
  • Still functional on many systems.

For most new installations, the NVIDIA App is the recommended choice.


4. Driver Updates

Your graphics driver acts as the communication layer between Windows, Microsoft Flight Simulator and your graphics card.

Driver updates may include:

  • Performance improvements.
  • Bug fixes.
  • Stability enhancements.
  • Support for new GPUs.
  • Support for new technologies.
  • Security updates.

Should You Install Every Driver Immediately?

Not always.

A newly released driver may:

  • Improve performance.
  • Fix known issues.
  • Introduce compatibility problems.
  • Affect specific games differently.

If your simulator is running perfectly, there is usually no need to rush into every new driver release.

Many experienced users wait a short time to see whether any significant issues are reported before updating.


Best Practice

Update when:

  • A driver fixes a problem you’re experiencing.
  • Support for new hardware or features is required.
  • You have a reason to install it.

Avoid updating simply because a newer version exists.


5. NVIDIA Overlay

The NVIDIA Overlay provides quick access to several useful features while you’re in-game.

These include:

  • Filters.
  • Performance statistics.

The overlay is convenient for monitoring system performance during a flight.

However, like any background feature, it uses some system resources.

If you never use these features, disabling the overlay may slightly reduce unnecessary background activity.


6. Automatic Optimisation

One feature of NVIDIA software is automatic game optimisation.

The software analyses your hardware and suggests graphics settings.

While this can provide a useful starting point, it has limitations.

Microsoft Flight Simulator is highly configurable and every pilot has different priorities.

For example:

One user may prioritise:

  • Maximum FPS.

Another may prefer:

  • Higher Terrain LOD.

Another may prioritise:

  • Better clouds.

Automatic optimisation cannot know your personal preferences.


My Recommendation

Use NVIDIA’s optimisation only as a starting point if you’re new to Flight Simulator.

Once you understand the graphics settings, configure them manually to suit your hardware and flying style.


7. Driver Rollback

Occasionally, a new graphics driver may introduce unexpected problems.

Examples include:

  • Stuttering.
  • Flickering.
  • Performance loss.
  • Visual artefacts.
  • Crashes.

If this happens, rolling back to a previous stable driver is often the quickest solution.

Windows Device Manager offers rollback functionality in some situations, or you can manually install an earlier NVIDIA driver.

Keep a note of which driver version works well with your system so you have a known good configuration to return to if needed.


8. Capture Tools

The NVIDIA App includes several capture features.

Examples include:

Instant Replay

Continuously records recent gameplay and allows you to save the last few minutes when something memorable happens.


Manual Recording

Start and stop recording whenever you choose.

Useful for:

  • Tutorials.
  • Flight reviews.
  • YouTube videos.

Screenshots

Capture still images directly from the simulator.

Useful for:

  • Flight logs.
  • Community sharing.
  • Virtual airline reports.

Performance Overlay

Displays useful information such as:

  • FPS.
  • GPU usage.
  • GPU temperature.
  • CPU usage (depending on configuration).
  • Frame times.

These tools are valuable when benchmarking or diagnosing performance issues.


Does MSFS Benefit From These Features?

Yes, but only if you use them.

Recording gameplay and running overlays consumes some system resources.

If you never use these features, disabling them may reduce unnecessary background activity.

For occasional recording or benchmarking, the performance impact is usually modest on modern hardware.


Common Myths

Myth 1

“The newest driver is always the fastest.”

False.

New drivers often improve compatibility and fix bugs, but they can also introduce new issues.


Myth 2

“NVIDIA’s automatic optimisation always chooses the best settings.”

False.

It provides general recommendations but cannot account for your personal preferences, add-ons or flying style.


Myth 3

“The overlay significantly reduces FPS.”

Not necessarily.

On modern systems, the impact is usually small, but if you never use it, disabling it can reduce background activity.


Myth 4

“You should never roll back a driver.”

False.

If a new driver introduces a genuine issue, returning to a previously stable version is a perfectly reasonable troubleshooting step.
