Today we’re going to begin exploring one of the most powerful optimisation tools available to NVIDIA users:
NVIDIA Control Panel.
Many Flight Simulator users open NVIDIA Control Panel after watching a YouTube video and immediately start changing settings without understanding what they actually do.
Some guides recommend changing every option.
Others suggest leaving everything at default.
The truth lies somewhere in the middle.
Some settings can genuinely improve your experience when configured correctly.
Others make no difference to Microsoft Flight Simulator.
Some settings can even reduce image quality or create unnecessary problems if they are changed without understanding their purpose.
The goal of this lesson is to explain how NVIDIA Control Panel works and teach you how to build a dedicated Flight Simulator profile before we begin changing individual settings in later lessons.

The engineer doesn’t drive the car.
Instead, they prepare it before the race begins.
That’s exactly what NVIDIA Control Panel does.
It prepares the graphics driver before Flight Simulator starts.
2. What Can NVIDIA Control Panel Change?
NVIDIA Control Panel can control many aspects of your graphics card, including:

- Power management in certain scenarios.
Disadvantages
A change intended to improve Flight Simulator could unintentionally affect another game or professional application.
For this reason, you should avoid making unnecessary changes to Global Settings unless you fully understand their impact.
Program Settings
Program Settings allow you to create a custom profile for a specific application.
Instead of changing the graphics driver for every program, you only change it for one application.
For example:
Microsoft Flight Simulator can have its own dedicated profile.
Call of Duty can have a different profile.
Adobe Premiere can have another.
Each application can use its own configuration without affecting the others.
This is the safest and most flexible way to optimise individual games.
4. Why Microsoft Flight Simulator Should Have Its Own Profile

Because of this, Flight Simulator often benefits from its own dedicated NVIDIA profile.
This allows you to optimise the simulator without changing the behaviour of your other games.

Imagine you enable a driver setting specifically because it improves Flight Simulator.
If that change is made globally, another game may behave differently or even lose performance.
Using a dedicated Flight Simulator profile avoids this problem.
5. Creating A Dedicated MSFS Profile
To create a dedicated Microsoft Flight Simulator profile:
- Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
- Select Manage 3D Settings.
- Open the Program Settings tab.
- Click Add.
- Select Microsoft Flight Simulator from the list. If it doesn’t appear, browse to the simulator’s executable file.
- A new application profile will now be available.
- All changes you make in future lessons should be applied to this profile unless otherwise stated.
This ensures your optimisation changes affect Microsoft Flight Simulator only.
6. Restoring Default Settings
One of the biggest advantages of NVIDIA Control Panel is that every setting can be returned to its default value.
If you ever experience:

You can restore the defaults and begin again.
To restore defaults:
- Open NVIDIA Control Panel.

If you’re unsure whether a setting should be global, it’s usually safer to leave it at its default value and make changes within a Program Profile instead.
8. When Should You Use Application Controlled?
Many NVIDIA Control Panel options allow you to choose Application Controlled.
This means the graphics driver will allow the game to decide how that feature behaves.
Microsoft Flight Simulator already includes a wide range of graphics options.
For many settings, allowing the simulator to control them directly avoids conflicts between the driver and the game.
As a general principle:
- If Microsoft Flight Simulator provides a dedicated setting, it’s often best to configure it inside the simulator rather than forcing an override through the driver—unless you have a specific reason to do otherwise.

9. Common Optimisation Mistakes
Before we begin changing settings in future lessons, it’s important to avoid some common mistakes.
Mistake 1
Changing every setting at once.
If performance changes, you’ll have no idea which setting caused it.
Always change one setting at a time.

Using Global Settings for Flight Simulator.
This can unintentionally affect other games and applications.

Copying another person’s profile.
Their hardware, monitor, drivers and flying style may be completely different from yours.
