In the previous lesson we learnt how graphics drivers affect Microsoft Flight Simulator performance.

Now we’re moving deeper into the computer itself.

Today we’re going to discuss something that many people completely overlook…

Your motherboard.

Every component inside your PC communicates through the motherboard.

Your CPU.

Your graphics card.

Your SSD.

Your RAM.

Your USB devices.

Your internet connection.

Even your audio.

Without the correct motherboard software, these components may not communicate as efficiently as they should.

Today we’ll learn how chipset drivers, BIOS updates and motherboard drivers work together to create a stable and responsive Flight Simulator experience.

1. What Is A Motherboard?

The motherboard is the main circuit board inside your computer.

Think of it as the central communication hub.

Every major component connects to it.

USB ports

Audio devices

Network controller

Cooling fans

Power delivery

Nothing inside your PC communicates without the motherboard.

Imagine Heathrow Airport.

The aircraft represent your hardware.

The runways represent the motherboard.

The air traffic control system represents the chipset.

If Heathrow wasn’t organised…

Aircraft couldn’t communicate properly.

Exactly the same thing happens inside your computer.

2. What Are Chipset Drivers?

Chipset drivers are software that allow Windows to communicate correctly with your motherboard.

Many people think:

“My PC already works.”

Therefore…

“I don’t need chipset drivers.”

That’s not correct.

Windows installs basic drivers.

Chipset drivers install the manufacturer-optimised drivers.


What Do Chipset Drivers Control?

Chipset drivers help Windows correctly manage:

CPU communication

PCI Express

USB controllers

Power management

Storage controllers

NVMe drives

RAM communication

Integrated devices

Device scheduling

Power states

These drivers don’t usually increase FPS dramatically.

Instead…

They improve:

Why They Matter For Microsoft Flight Simulator

Microsoft Flight Simulator constantly moves enormous amounts of information between:

The drivers are completely different.

Never install Intel chipset drivers on an AMD motherboard.

Never install AMD chipset drivers on an Intel motherboard.

Every motherboard manufacturer provides a support page.

Examples:

ASRock

These pages contain:

LAN drivers

Audio drivers

Wi-Fi drivers

BIOS updates

Why Use The Support Page?

Your motherboard manufacturer knows exactly which components are installed.

Downloading drivers from the correct support page ensures compatibility.

Always verify your motherboard model before downloading drivers.

Press:

Windows + R

Type:

msinfo32

Press Enter.

Look for:

BaseBoard Manufacturer

BaseBoard Product

Write both down.

Example:

Now you know exactly which support page to visit.


4. What Is A BIOS?

The BIOS stands for:

Basic Input/Output System.

Modern systems often use UEFI firmware, but many people still refer to it as the BIOS.

It is the first software your computer runs before Windows loads.

The BIOS checks:

CPU

RAM

Storage

Graphics card

Cooling

Boot devices

Power delivery

Once everything passes…

Windows starts.


Why BIOS Updates Matter

Manufacturers occasionally release BIOS updates.

These may include:

CPU compatibility

Memory compatibility

Performance improvements

Bug fixes

Security updates

Stability improvements

New hardware support

Sometimes BIOS updates improve system stability for newer processors or memory kits.


Should You Always Update The BIOS?

No.

This is one of the biggest myths online.

Many YouTube videos say:

“Always install the latest BIOS.”

That isn’t always good advice.


When A BIOS Update Is Worth Considering

Consider updating if:

You’re installing a newer CPU that requires BIOS support.

Your motherboard manufacturer documents a fix for an issue you’re experiencing.

You’re experiencing known stability issues addressed in a newer BIOS.

You’re building a new PC and want the latest supported firmware.


When You May Leave It Alone

If:

Your PC is completely stable.

Everything works correctly.

You’re not upgrading hardware.

The latest BIOS doesn’t address anything relevant to your system.

Then there may be no immediate reason to update.

Updating a BIOS carries a small amount of risk if interrupted, so it shouldn’t be treated like a routine monthly update.


5. Audio Drivers

Audio drivers control:

Headphones

Speakers

Microphones

USB audio devices

HD Audio

Bluetooth audio

Good audio drivers provide:

Stable sound.

Low latency.

Reliable microphone communication.

While audio drivers rarely affect FPS directly, corrupted audio drivers can sometimes contribute to crackling audio or other system issues.


6. LAN Drivers

LAN stands for:

Local Area Network.

Your LAN driver controls your Ethernet connection.

For Microsoft Flight Simulator this matters because the simulator streams:

Photogrammetry

Live Weather

Live Traffic

Satellite imagery

Marketplace content

Updates

If your network driver is outdated or unstable…

You may experience:

Slow downloads.

Connection interruptions.

Delayed scenery streaming.


Wi-Fi Drivers

Your wireless adapter driver is equally important.

7. Checking Your Drivers

System Devices

Review:

Any warning symbols.

Unknown devices.

Disabled hardware.

If everything appears normal…

Your drivers are likely functioning correctly.


8. Should You Install Every Driver Update?

No.

Just because a newer driver exists doesn’t always mean you need it immediately.

Ask yourself:

Am I having problems?

Does the update fix my issue?

Is my current system stable?

If the answer is:

“My PC works perfectly.”

There may be no urgent reason to change anything.

Optimisation is about improving stability—not constantly chasing updates.
