Welcome to Lesson 4 of Module 2.
In this lesson, we are going to cover one of the most important parts of PC optimisation for Microsoft Flight Simulator: graphics drivers.
Your graphics driver is the software that allows Windows, Microsoft Flight Simulator, and your graphics card to communicate correctly.
Even if you have a powerful GPU, poor driver configuration, outdated drivers, corrupted installations, or unstable new releases can cause:
- Lower FPS
- Stutters
- Crashes to desktop
- Black screens
- Texture issues
- DLSS problems
- Frame Generation issues
- Poor GPU utilisation
- Visual glitches
- Random instability
Graphics driver optimisation is not about blindly installing every new driver the moment it releases. It is about understanding when to update, when to wait, when to roll back, and how to install drivers cleanly.
By the end of this lesson, students will understand how to manage graphics drivers properly and safely.

1. What Is A Graphics Driver?
A graphics driver is a piece of software that allows your operating system and applications to communicate with your graphics card.
Think of your GPU as the engine of an aircraft.
The driver is the flight computer telling that engine how to behave.
Without the correct driver, your graphics card may not perform properly, even if the hardware itself is powerful.
The driver controls how the GPU handles:
- 3D rendering
- Shader compilation
- Texture loading
- DLSS
- Frame Generation
- Anti-aliasing
- Display output
- VRR / G-Sync / FreeSync
- Power behaviour
- Game profiles
- Stability fixes
For Microsoft Flight Simulator, this matters because the simulator is graphically demanding and heavily dependent on stable driver communication.
2. Why Graphics Drivers Matter For Microsoft Flight Simulator
Microsoft Flight Simulator is not a simple game.
It uses:
- Complex scenery
- Volumetric clouds
- Dynamic lighting
- Large textures
- Real-time weather
- Detailed aircraft
- Glass cockpits
- Multiple rendering technologies
- Frame Generation
- DLSS / FSR
- High-resolution displays
- Large airports
Your graphics driver helps the simulator communicate with your GPU as efficiently as possible.
A good driver can improve:
- Stability
- Frame pacing
- Compatibility
- GPU utilisation
- Image quality
- Support for new features
- Crash fixes
A bad or corrupted driver can cause:
- Stutters
- CTDs
- Flickering
- Poor performance
- Driver timeouts
- Black screens

This is why graphics drivers should be treated as part of your optimisation process.
3. NVIDIA Drivers
NVIDIA graphics cards are common among Microsoft Flight Simulator users.
NVIDIA drivers support features such as:
- DLSS
- DLAA
- Frame Generation on supported RTX 40-series and newer GPUs
- NVIDIA Reflex
- G-Sync
- NVIDIA Control Panel
- NVIDIA App / GeForce Experience
- Game-specific profiles
For many MSFS users, NVIDIA drivers can have a noticeable impact on smoothness, especially when using DLSS or Frame Generation.
Checking Your NVIDIA Driver Version
To check your NVIDIA driver:
- Right-click on your desktop.
- Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
- Click Help at the top.
- Select System Information.
- Look for Driver Version.
You can also check inside the NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience.
Record this driver version in your course worksheet.
NVIDIA App / GeForce Experience
The NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience can help with:
- Driver updates
- Game optimisation profiles
- Recording
- Overlays
- Screenshots
However, for advanced users, automatic game optimisation settings should be used carefully.
The software may apply settings that do not match your personal performance goals.
For this course, we recommend learning what each setting does rather than relying entirely on automatic optimisation.
4. AMD Drivers
AMD graphics cards use AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
AMD drivers support features such as:
- FSR
- Radeon Anti-Lag
- Radeon Chill
- FreeSync
- Radeon Image Sharpening
- Driver-level profiles
- Performance monitoring
- Recording and streaming tools
AMD users should manage drivers with the same care as NVIDIA users.
Checking Your AMD Driver Version
To check your AMD driver:
- Right-click on your desktop.
- Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
- Go to Settings.
- Select System.
- Check your driver version.
Record this in your worksheet.
5. Updating Graphics Drivers
Updating drivers can be useful when:
- A new MSFS update has been released.
- A new aircraft or add-on requires updated support.
- You are experiencing crashes or graphical issues.
- Release notes mention fixes for Microsoft Flight Simulator or DirectX.
- Your current driver is very old.
- DLSS, Frame Generation, or FSR features are not working correctly.
However, updating is not always automatically better.
A new driver can sometimes introduce new issues.
That is why we update carefully.
6. When Not To Update Immediately
Do not automatically install a brand-new driver on day one if your system is currently stable.
This is especially important if:
- You are in the middle of a long campaign, event, or project.
- You rely on your simulator for content creation.
- You are preparing for a live stream.
- Your current driver is stable.
- Other users are reporting issues with the latest driver.
- You do not need any of the fixes listed in the release notes.
For many simmers, stability is more important than always being on the newest driver.
A good rule is:
If your current system is stable, wait a few days and check user feedback before updating.
7. Clean Installation
A clean installation removes older driver components and installs a fresh copy of the new driver.
This can help if your driver installation has become corrupted or unstable.
A clean install may help with:
- Random crashes
- Poor GPU utilisation
- Driver errors
- Stutters after multiple driver updates
- Black screens
- Missing NVIDIA Control Panel options
- Broken DLSS or Frame Generation behaviour
NVIDIA Clean Installation
During NVIDIA driver installation:
- Download the latest driver from NVIDIA or use the NVIDIA App.
- Choose Custom Installation instead of Express.
- Tick Perform a clean installation.
- Continue the installation.
- Restart your PC when complete.
This resets NVIDIA settings back to default, so you may need to reapply your preferred NVIDIA Control Panel settings afterwards.
AMD Factory Reset Option
AMD Software may offer a factory reset option during installation.
This removes previous AMD driver settings before installing the new version.
Use this when troubleshooting driver issues or when switching between major driver versions.
Restart your PC after installation.
8. Driver Rollback
Sometimes a new driver causes problems.
Examples include:
- Worse performance
- More stutters
- New crashes
- Visual flickering
- Broken DLSS or FSR behaviour
- Frame Generation problems
- Higher GPU temperatures
- VR issues
In that situation, rolling back to a previous stable driver may be the best option.
How To Roll Back Using Device Manager
- Right-click the Start button.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your GPU.
- Select Properties.
- Go to the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver, if available.
If Roll Back Driver is greyed out, you may need to manually download and install an older driver from NVIDIA or AMD.
9. Studio vs Game Ready Drivers
For NVIDIA users, there are two common driver branches:
- Game Ready Driver
- Studio Driver
Game Ready Driver
Game Ready Drivers are designed for the latest games and game updates.
They often include optimisations for newly released titles, patches, or game technologies.
For most gamers, this is the default choice.
Studio Driver
Studio Drivers are designed for creative applications such as:
- Video editing
- 3D rendering
- Streaming
- Content creation
- Adobe software
- Blender
- DaVinci Resolve
Studio Drivers often prioritise stability and certification for creative workflows.
Some simmers prefer Studio Drivers because they may feel more stable on their system, especially if they also edit content or stream.
Which One Should Students Use?
There is no single answer.
Use Game Ready if:
- You mostly game.
- You want the latest game optimisations.
- You want support for recent releases quickly.
Use Studio if:
- You create content.
- You value stability.
- You use editing software heavily.
- You have experienced instability with Game Ready drivers.
The best choice is the one that performs most smoothly and reliably on your own PC.
10. Driver Release Notes
Driver release notes explain what has changed in a driver update.
They may include:
- Game fixes
- Known issues
- Security updates
- Performance improvements
- New feature support
- Bug fixes
- Compatibility notes
Before updating, students should briefly check whether the release notes mention:
- Microsoft Flight Simulator
- DirectX 11
- DirectX 12
- DLSS
- Frame Generation
- VR
- Stutter fixes
- Crash fixes
If the notes do not mention anything relevant and your current driver is stable, there may be no urgent need to update immediately.
11. Recommended Driver Strategy For MSFS
For most students, recommend this approach:
- Record your current driver version.
- Check whether your current system is stable.
- Read feedback before installing a brand-new driver.
- Update if there is a relevant fix or if your driver is outdated.
- Use a clean installation if troubleshooting.
- Restart after installation.
- Re-test your simulator using the same Performance Baseline from Module 1.
- Roll back if the new driver creates problems.
This approach avoids random changes and keeps optimisation controlled.
12. Student Task – Check And Verify Graphics Drivers
Step 1 – Identify Your GPU
Open Task Manager.
Go to:
Performance → GPU
Write down your GPU model.
Example:
- NVIDIA RTX 4070
- NVIDIA RTX 5080
- AMD RX 7800 XT
Step 2 – Check Current Driver Version
For NVIDIA:
Open NVIDIA Control Panel or NVIDIA App and record the driver version.
For AMD:
Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition and record the driver version.
Step 3 – Decide Whether To Update
Ask yourself:
- Is my current driver stable?
- Am I experiencing crashes or visual issues?
- Is my driver very outdated?
- Does the latest driver mention fixes relevant to MSFS?
- Are other users reporting issues with the latest driver?
Step 4 – Update Or Verify
If your driver is stable and reasonably current:
Record it as verified.
If your driver is outdated or causing problems:
Update it using NVIDIA or AMD’s official software.
Step 5 – Restart
After updating, restart your PC.
This ensures the driver loads correctly.
Step 6 – Re-Test In Microsoft Flight Simulator
Use your Performance Baseline test from Module 1.
Record:
- Average FPS
- Lowest FPS
- Highest FPS
- MainThread or GPU limited
- Any stutters
- Any visual issues
Compare the results.
Student Checklist
- GPU model recorded.
- Current driver version recorded.
- Driver stability assessed.
- Release notes checked where appropriate.
- Driver updated or verified.
- Clean installation used if needed.
- PC restarted.
- MSFS retested after driver verification.
- Results compared against Module 1 baseline.
